SUN'S COMING UP / WHAT A DAY CITIZENS Sun's coming up again, another day dawning; people getting up again , ev'ryone yawning. It's bound to be a good day, we'll spend it our way, 2x. Steeped in Sin. What a day to tell a lie, or to pull the wings from off a fly, or help a rich old uncle die. Just the day for drinking gin, lovely day to fill with sin, a good day to be crazy in. HOLY GLORY BAND What a day for saving sinners, notching up another point, doing well by doing good, shaking up the joint. What a way to make a living, Marketing the master plan; Sell salvation to the minds of unsuspecting man. Oh we go from town to town, And we really get around But we never stay much longer than it takes to sing our song. And out motto up to now, Is to be speedier than thou. And we thank the Lord for the world we're in, We'd be unemployed if weren't for sin. When you're traveling do gooders, Folk don't get time to scoff. If things get rough, you simply just buzz off. What a day for starting strife, or cutting purses with a knife. Or taking tea, With someone else's wife. A day for putting up your dukes. Or giving your neighbor filthy looks. A veritably perfect day To cook the books. MAD INHABITANTS (Noel Coward sing/speak): We are the mad inhabitants of the City of Destruction, We lie and cheat and we're far from sweet and we're experts in corruption. We are the bad inhabitants of a strange society, and we're very glad to be.   (SING): Yeah the great unwashed the great unshaved the very terribly behaved, we wouldn't change for all the world It's a pleasure just to be depraved. We are the mad practitioners of crime beyond detection, each ugly vice is twice as nice when practiced to perfection. We thrive on human weakness of each and every kind, and in our dirty little way, we're very glad to find. No room for good of any kind, but lots of muck to blow your mind, we always will behave like swine, we're hot for crime on borrowed time. HYPOCRISY My name is HYPOCRISY, Don't you see yourself in me? CITIZENS  He's Hypocrisee-ee yeah. LIBERALITY My name is LIBERATLITY, I'm free with everything you see. CITIZENS Liberalitee-ee yeah. PLIABILITY My name is PLIABILITY, No-one's quite as bent as me. CITIZENS We are the mad inhabitants of the City of Destruction, We lie and cheat and we're far from sweet and we're experts in corruption. We are the bad inhabitants of a strange society, and we're very glad to be. Yeah the great unwashed the great unshaved the very terribly behaved, we wouldn't change for all the world It's a pleasure just to be depraved.

GO CHRISTIAN GO Why does the blood run cold in my veins, When people start to talk of names, When I was a child this cit of doom, Was not a place of constant gloom, But bright and happy - where children's cries, Echoed like anthems to the skies, And hung like the scent of a perfumed flower To sweeten the air of that day, that hour.  Such was the world when I was named, But soon that world so greatly changed, In passing time our sense grew dulled, Illusion thick like habit lulled Our hearts, our minds our souls to sleep, And there we remained in slumber deep, Till kindled deep inside I heard Some song of love and holy word, Some force that then became The distant stirring of my name and it said     Go Christian go … tell the world  you know,         Take the Book in your hand             And tell the land that you know Christian, know .. it said: Go Christian, go .. tell the world you know Take the Book in your hand and tell the land   That you know Christian know               You call me fool, perhaps I am,            At least I'm not a frightened man,       There have been more me more fool than me           Who've changed the course of destiny, You say the book means pain and fear, Can that be worse than living here. Don't make choose between the two, Of being me or loving you,         For if I have to make a choice,       I'll listen to the voice that tells me:     Go Christian go … tell the world  you know,         Take the Book in your hand             And tell the land that you know Christian, know, and it said: Go Christian, go .. tell the world you know Take the Book in your hand and tell the land    That you know Christian know

SHOW ME PEACE Show me peace and show me light, Let me be Christ's reflection. keep my sword and armor bright, A child of the resurrection. In the army of the Prince of Peace I shall a soldier be And proudly bear Golgotha's Cross In the last great victory. If I were just a tenth as wise as Solomon the king, if I could spread but a little hope that magic star did bring. If I could sing the songs that David sang In the hills Galilee, I know I might come to like the person that is me.  All sin and sadness I would leave as my heart finds new direction, If only I could but achieve some knowledge of perfection, REFRAIN Crowd turns on Christian, first gently mocking, then building to violent jeering. If only he had Noah's trust, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!  Like Abraham knew what was just has, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! If only he had servility and humility like Ruth, But all he is, is Christian - Sad seeker of the truth. If only he had the bravery of Daniel in the Den And if like Christ he could only see the better side of men, Wishes he had Samson's strength, Wishes he had Goliath's length, Wishes he had angels' wings, Or but a tenth of all these things. He's looking for a vision bright, But all he is, is Christian - Sad seeker of the light. Show me peace and show me light,  Let me be Christ's reflection. Keep my sword and armor bright,  A child of the resurrection, In the army of the Prince of Peace I shall a soldier be And proudly bear Golgotha's Cross At the last great victory, victory.

WHO KNOWS / SONG OF THE NIGHT WHO KNOWS Never use to have a future, but that's not so anymore;  The past's behind me, I've closed the door. Life is a miracle, life is sweet And under the road's rolling out from under my feet, I'm gonna find where it goes,  Who know s what'll happened, who knows. Now I have a future that's in store, Ive just opened up a brand new door And today's a fantasy , today's good news. And the road's ruling out from under my shoes,  I'm going to follow whoever it goes,  Who knows what'll happen, who knows. With the book to guide me  I can change the world, I'm learning about miracles I see them all around me, Ev' ry day they amaze and astound me, Ev' ry day the sun comes up Just like the day before,  But every day's a different day with different things to in store I can guess the future, what is more, I've just found a key to a prison door, And I've got a  new song going round in my head; And the road's rolling out like a silvery thread, I'm going to reach wherever it goes, who knows what'll happen, who knows. I feel a little tired now,  and the say is far too bright, I'd like to rest a little while So I'll whistle up some night. During the last verse, Christian has found a place to sleep. He lies down as the lights are dimmed. As he sings the final line, he becomes aware that is is cold and lonely. Sound effects of wind with leaves blowing across the stage. Eerie light effects.              SONG OF THE NIGHT I am the night, I am dark, I'm everywhere. I'm beyond the very bound'ries of every face except the face of time. I'll go when the dawn comes, But until the dawn comes the word is mine, all is mine, you are mine. CHRISTIAN Oh come on, I'm not afraid of the dark. I'm strong. NIGHT AND CHORUS  Ah! CHRISTIAN: Yes, strong, strong! CHOIR Too strong to feel a doubt, too strong to fear far too strong for us. we know you, we know you, ooh....... CHRISTIAN: I know no doubt I know no fear, You can't touch me, you don't know me, deep inside there burns a light,  and see, here's the book to show me APPOLYON: (SPEAKS): Aah, send a little breeze send a small dark wind to blow upon this great illuminated soul blow, blow, blow dark, blow keen. Cut like a knife slice quick beneath the skin let him see within, let him know that bravery is a shaving, shaven by the wind,  ha, ha, ha!

Lonliness 03:15
LONELINESS It's only been a short while Since you walked out of my life, Yours was the first door to close I watched you walk away As if you did it every day Now what's done is done I suppose And it takes a little time For the numbness to wear off To feel the fear of loneliness creep in And it's not so much the leaving As the knowing that the line Between leaving me and staying was so thin, And I always thought that loneliness Was something that you find When the others all go off to somewhere Leaving you behind Now I know it's when you look inside To find the strength to stop the doubt The only door left open Was the one that let it out Now I know what loneliness is all about And that's what loneliness is all about And it's only been a short while Since you walked out of my life And there's no one left but me That I can blame Now you're not here to hold me back I don't know where to start And the night makes every pathway Look the same.

IMAGES OF PAIN Do I think of you images of pain, There's a hurt in my head since I left your bed But I'd do it again, You're the extra weight I carry when I walk, And you'll be the weight they bury when I stop the clock. For there's a dreadful hurt in me If I could only set it free Then I would learn to see the reason of it all. Would you tear the very fibre of my brain, With your face in my head I wish I were dead For I feel the pain, You're the thought I thought I'd never have to think, You're the only bitter draught I've ever had to drink. For there's a dreadful hurt in me If I could only set it free Then I would learn to see the reason of it all. Do I think of you in images of pain, There's a hurt in my head since I left your bed But I'd do it again, You're the extra weight I carry when I walk, And you'll be the weight they bury when I stop the clock. (3x)

To Life 02:58
TO LIFE APPOLYON (SPEAKS): Oh yes you and your piety, your talk of truth and light- Goes well with a society, that lives by truth and right, But all your fine intentions are doomed here to defeat. For we abide by principles like trickery and deceit. Oh yes first in Destruction, and now in Vanity Fair, Where would it all end if I didn't stop you here, This wild talk of truth would cause sedition and strife. I have no alternative but to sentence you to life, JURY AND CHORUS: To life to life We'll sentence him to life, The answer is most certainly To sentence him to life. This wild talk of truth Will cause sedition and strife. He has no alternative But to sentence him to life, ALL To life to life We'll sentence him to life, The answer is most certainly To sentence him to APPOLYON [cuts off chorus with hand cue] If might is right and I am might There's only one solution! Ha, ha, So rests the case for the prosecution. JURY AND CHORUS: To life to life We'll sentence him to life, The answer is most certainly To sentence him to life. This wild talk of truth Will cause sedition and strife. He has no alternative But to sentence him to life, VAN EVANGELIST Just for once we're in agreement myself and the judge This isn't just a trifle some superficial grudge That man you see there in the dock has gone out of his mind Decent folk like you should be protected from his kind He spread doubt in Destruction, joy in Vanity Fair Where would it all end if you didn't stop him here Such wild talk of truth and light can only lead to strifr The answer is most certainly to sentence him to life JURY AND CHORUS: To life to life We'll sentence him to life, The answer is most certainly To sentence him to life. This wild talk of truth Will cause sedition and strife. He has no alternative But to sentence him to life, VAN EVANGELIST This court's a costly business Lets save further expense So rests the case milord .. for the defence ALL To life to life We'll sentence him to life, The answer is most certainly To sentence .. him .. to .. life.

WARM DAYS OF HOME CHRISTIANA: It falls of the tongue like melting snow, Like mornings in summer when warm breezes blow. How did it happen that we became strangers? And now that we've no place to go, Will it change us? Oh where are the warm days, -1The warm days of home? Oh how I clung to you, Oh how I sung to you, How I was one with you, Near to you, dear to you, Where have they gone to, The warm days of home? CHRISTIAN: If I'd known what it cost I could never have gone, If I'd known what I lost how could I carry on? But so much has changed There's so much behind me. It's hard to believe you could ever remind me. Where are the warm days, The warm days of home? Oh how I clung to you, Oh how I sung to you How you were one with me, near to me, dear to me, Where have they gone to, Those warm days of home? DUET Where are the warm days When we were together? Sunlight and gold to me, Light of the moon to me, Why are you gone from me, You who were one with me? Where have they gone to, The warm days of home?

CHILDREN OF MORNING [Melody of Go Christian Go] If you have love and you know where you're going to, You'll never want for someone to run to, Look at each other and there you'll find yourself. For you are the hope of the children of morning, Go write your name on the history book's page, Every little step takes you nearer to the dawning of your age. So .. go into the world, let the world know you're coming And grow like the flowers and blossoms free, Learn how to love like the word was intended, Change the course of destiny Then see how the world in its imperfection, Shines with the face of the morning sun, Dance with the days and see how the faces follow each and everyone, Set your spirit free and hear it sing. Go Christian go, tell the world you know, Take the book in your hand and tell the land That you know Christian know. Go Christian go, tell the world you know, Take the book in your hand and tell the land That you know Christian know.

MOMENT OF SUNLIGHT Someday, sometime, we'll have to find Somewhere where there'll be  peace of mind, and looking back when we're safe I just know you'll laugh at me when I remember and so I'll keep this moment of sunlight loving you now as I do, knowing how easy the thread of all that we have is broken in two. Just for a moment in sunlight we are both together as one, I ask no more than the chance to be where I am under the sun. Having known you, having loved you, having lost you and then having found you again I would ask for much more but I'll be content to .. Love and be loved For this moment,       Just to be lost in today, That's all we ask of each other,    Nothing but time can take it away,                    And time, in good time will take it away.                       Just for a moment in sunlight We are together as one, I ask no more than the chance To be where I am under the sun, To be in this moment .. under the sun

about

This is the original rough demo album of tracks used in the writing of the musical PILGRIM, called CHRISTIAN in the first production. It is a mix of tracks recorded in my small studio and some later recordings for albums.

credits

released November 26, 2016

Thanks to all the wonderful people like Mike Hankinson, Geoffrey Sutherland, John Moss, Barry Kent, Amanda Strydom, Aubrey Ellis and especially the people of Durban in 1979 who made the first production a sell out success; and sent the musical on it's way. Thanks also to all the later productions by amateur groups, schools and small theatres. The current rekindling of interest in the musical is due to you who saw it as children and loved it as much as we we loved performing it. There were people who saw the show 17 times .. that's got to be a record.
