about

My grandfather was a pioneer and Randlord in the early days of Joburg .. when I first arrived in that mining town the first thing I saw was the mine dumps .. the last thing I saw when I moved away was the mine dumps disappearing .. seems there was gold in them thar hills!

lyrics

ERGO – HEART OF GOLD

Well the first time I saw the Joburg sky .. I couldn't believe my eyes
And the sun was a great ball of flame
A thousand golden flat topped hills on either side of me
That's when I thought of her name
She was rough as a bears ass but people there
Passed on what they'd been told
That the mother of all them barren hills
Was the ore with the heart of gold

Again and again in the wind and rain .. she never let me down
Silently showing the way
From Booysens Brakpan and Germiston .. to the Starlight drive in show
She never led me astray
And in all my time in that mining town
Where life is bought and sold
I could always find my way back home
To the whore with the heart of gold

And I remember a song called Mountains of Men
And stories my grandfather told
How the dust would fly in a yellow sky
And the streets would be paved with gold
Now the big men fed by the tunnels of a million small mens dreams
Have found another way to make their ends justify their means
And if that means progress I'm not really sure
If progress is what we need
But maybe it's how we learn to laugh at ourselves
In our indifference and our greed

Well it took so long to put them there
Seems a shame to watch them disappear
When the grass was beginning to grow
But what price history when you're making a buck
They loaded them hills in the back of a truck
And we stood and we watched them go
So look after your towers and lakes and flowers
If they're more than ten years old
Or they'll sell them too right from under you
Like they sold you heart of gold

And I remember ….
